Uganda: New Population Policy Tasks Government to Invest in People

With Uganda’s population expected to double to 55 million in the next 20 years, it seems obvious that the population has serious implications on the economy, which has been growing at an average of only 5 percent in the past years.

The government has already raised concerns over the fast growing numbers arguing that if the current population trends continue, Uganda’s population would strike 130 million by 2050.

Uganda’s Population Outpaces Economic Growth

Experts say Uganda’s growing population will lead to poverty, given the high rate of unemployment and costly demands for improved health, education and sanitation. Voice of America English to Africa Service reporter Peterson Ssendi in Kampala files this report on the population crisis.

According to the Parliamentarians’ Forum, Uganda’s population is expected to double in the next 21 years to over 50 million residents. Experts offer a variety of reasons. a typical Ugandan wife delivers seven children on average and Uganda adds over two million people each year to the population.

Dramatool

Launched in 2002, Dramatool is a web-based platform described as “an international meeting point for drama/theatre education”. Available in Amharic, Chinese, English, French, Kiswahili, and Spanish (as of this writing), this website is an effort to empower drama and theatre practitioners through networking. Dramatool is run by a team of 11 people from 5 countries (Ethiopia, Kenya, Sweden, Tanzania, and Uganda) who have experience in working with drama and theatre as a tool for an inclusive and humane society.

Dramatool aims to be an open forum, which is available to anybody who is interested in and works in the area of drama education and performing arts.
