Umurage Urukwiye – Results

A sample of 299 new clients seeking family planning, voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) for HIV, and prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV services were interviewed. The interviews were conducted at six health facilities throughout Rwanda over the course of two months.

The key findings from the monitoring report are as follows:

  • More than half (57%) of new clients seeking health services in health centers and hospitals say they’ve listened to the PMC serial drama Umurage Urukwiye.
  • Listeners were asked what actions they took as a result of listening to the program. Nearly half (49%) said they talked to a spouse or partner about the subject of family planning heard in the drama. Approximately 4 in 10 (39%) said they followed advice given about family planning heard in the drama.
  • When asked what lessons they learned about family planning from the drama, close to half (45%) said they made the decision to use a family planning method.
  • When respondents were asked their most important source of information about the subjects of family planning, treating STIs, HIV testing, counseling, or condoms 44% (14% men and 30% women) said “radio.”
  • The program appears to be highly engaging with 87% of listeners saying they are “very satisfied” or “satisfied” with the content of the drama.

In June of 2009, a third round of clinic monitoring was conducted to determine the percent of clients motivated to get services as a result of listening to the program. Results showed:

  • Family Planning: 9%
  • Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT): 17%
  • Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT): 24%
