From November 2004 to June 2006, PMC was provided free air time by the Sudanese Ministry of Information and Communication to broadcast Ashreat Al Amal (“Sails of Hope”), which addressed Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting.

While Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) is illegal in Sudan, the practice continues almost unabated in both urban and rural areas.

Ashreat Al Amal poignantly incorporates this issue by using female characters to show the importance of eliminating the harmful traditional practice of FGM/C, and the advantages of protecting the health of the mother to ensure greater opportunities for her children.

Highlights of the evaluation of the project in Sudan include the following:

  • There was high listenership among the targeted group (women of reproductive age). Data gathered from clinic clients in 2005 indicated that between 29% and 39% of clinic clients listened to Ashreat al Amal.
  • There was an increase in the percentage of listeners who discussed HIV/AIDS with partners. Respondents to the impact evaluation were over 2 ½ times more likely to have discussed HIV/AIDS with their partners after the program than respondents at the baseline.
