NEW WELFARE PROGRAM HOPES TO COUNTER SLOWDOWN IN COUNTRY’S POPULATION GROWTH.

Turkey’s government on Thursday unveiled a new reform package aimed at realizing President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ambition for married couples to have more children to counter a slowdown in population growth.

The new welfare program, announced by Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu in Ankara, includes several financial incentive measures including special commemorative gold coins for first time mothers.

Erdogan has made no secret of his desire for Turkish women to have more children, saying in December that “one [child] means loneliness, two means rivalry, three means balance and four means abundance.”
