Empowering women also helps protect rivers and streams. Population Media Center works to protect the environment.

Environmentalists often talk about global climate change, acidification of the oceans, soil degradation, systemic drought, air pollution, dramatic habitat destruction, or dirty water. But unwanted or unplanned pregnancies, women’s rights, or the impact of education are not often included in the discussion. In 2008, 40 percent of pregnancies around the world were unplanned. Not only does the resulting population growth cause unnecessary environmental impacts, but the impact of these pregnancies on women and families can also be detrimental. The information and education that comes embedded within a spicy Population Media Center serial drama helps empower people to make decisions that result in smaller family sizes, thereby supporting healthier and more prosperous families while simultaneously bringing the population’s need for resources more in-line with what the planet can supply.
