Issue Advocacy

PMC advocates for human health, human rights, and environmental protection issues, all of which impact population.

PMC works to raise awareness of population. Many people don’t realize how quickly the global population is growing, the implications of that growth on the environment, or that this population growth is the result of a lack of health and human rights, particularly for women. This is why PMC advocates on behalf of essential health and human rights issues, such as reproductive health, girls’ right to education, and eliminating child marriage.

PMC awareness and advocacy campaigns range in duration and style. The campaigns are designed to present messages in accessible and understandable ways, but they can be very different from each other. For instance, PMC held cartoon contests to depict the importance of population, but has also developed multi-channel, global campaigns such as Global Population Speak Out. PMC also has two chapters working to address key issues in their regions.

In addition to media campaigns, PMC also convenes people to provide opportunities for deeper understanding, new perspectives, or new partnerships. Sometimes PMC convenes an issue’s thought-leaders, such as PMC’s recent workshop held in conjunction with the Millennium Alliance for Humanity and the Biosphere. Sometimes PMC convenes individuals from different industries to help build connections, such as building bridges between the US entertainment industry and the US public health industry. And sometimes PMC convenes disparate groups to try to understand different perspectives on the same issue.

All of these activities, whether it’s a campaign or a convening of people, aim to raise awareness and involvement. Population is part of the solution to so many challenges facing us today, such as climate change, food shortages, and pollution, and what needs to be done is complex logistically but simple conceptually: empower people to live informed, healthy lives with equal rights.
