PMC broadcasted Dandalin Iyali (“Family Forum”), a 72-episode radio drama in Niger designed to promote social change through both storytelling and community engagement. Complemented by interactive talk shows, social media campaigns, and listening clubs, the project created spaces for audiences to engage with the drama, share feedback, and reflect on critical issues such as education, early marriage, and gender-based violence.

Endline results highlight the program’s impact. Listeners reported greater awareness and discussion of sensitive topics that are often left unspoken within families and communities. The combination of mass media and grassroots engagement proved especially powerful in sparking dialogue and shifting attitudes—laying the groundwork for lasting change in Niger.

Beyond the Airwaves: Dandalin Iyali’s Role in Empowering Niger’s Communities

Population media center began working in Niger in February of 2006

In Niger, PMC is proud to take to the airwaves with a bold mission: to spark conversations that families rarely have and to challenge norms that keep young people from reaching their potential. Because three out of four girls are married before the age of 18, and more than 2.6 million children are kept from classrooms, Niger has the highest fertility rate in the world and severe gender equity challenges.

But PMC-Niger continues to tell stories to create change.

Perhaps most profoundly, Dandalin Iyali, as one example, gave Niger’s youth a voice. In a country where young people are rarely heard in community decision-making, the drama created space for them to see themselves—and to be seen by their parents. This intergenerational dialogue may prove to be the drama’s most lasting legacy: families beginning to talk about issues once left unspoken, from menstruation to marriage to dreams of the future.

Dandalin Iyali

Gobe Da Haske

At the heart of our mission lies Gobe da Haske (“Tomorrow Will Be a Brighter Day”), a captivating 144-episode radio show that aired in Hausa, the most widely understood language in Niger, from February 2006 to January 2007. This remarkable program, distributed to 72 radio stations across the country sparking conversations but also fostered community engagement, addressing critical issues in collaboration with USAID and UNFPA.
