In an effort to increase its impact in the US media market, Population Media Center (PMC) is growing its US Content Department by adding a Creative Executive to the team. This Los Angeles-based role offers a unique opportunity to develop, create and deliver Social Impact Entertainment (SIE) across multiple formats of storytelling (primarily scripted) in episodic, serialized, franchised, short, podcast, and film formats. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, passionate about content development for social good, and able to work well in a team and independently. S/he/They will have great relationships in the creative community/TV industry, strong agency and buyer relationships, a network of artists and writers, and will understand the issues that arise in development and production of content. Experience successfully developing TV series and/or motion pictures is ideal. Who You Are: 

  • You are a pro-active self-starter with a passion for PMC’s goals of women and girls’ gender/reproductive rights, equality, and a sustainable planet, who recognizes the power of storytelling through mass media to effect meaningful behavioral and social change.
  • You have a good understanding of the domestic and international TV marketplace, including knowledge of TV/OTT, the digital media landscape, and awareness of trends in both linear and streaming content platforms.
  • You have the ability to track leads on projects, network needs, and talent in alignment with PMC objectives.
  • You have good relationships with screenwriters, agents, directors, actors and studio/network executives.
  • You are a prolific consumer of scripted and unscripted content, and have a keen understanding of scripted TV series and formats (past and present) as well as story structure/character development, with the ability to identify projects with both impact and commercial potential, and generate creative ideas to enhance projects.
  • You understand the development process and can work closely with creators to develop story, formats, pitches and scripts, as well as identify break-out ideas and up-and-coming, diverse talent. This includes the ability to research ideas, write compelling creative briefs, and manage the creation of dynamic sizzle/concept reels.
  • You are able to defend your opinion in a collaborative environment and give discerning and constructive notes and feedback. Must be able to effectively give and take pitches (under supervision of Head of US Content).
  • You possess excellent presentation, verbal, and written communication skills, are detail-oriented, and can communicate effectively and work well with studios, networks, talent teams, and across all PMC divisions.
  • You have a strategic mindset for setting up content across formats, platforms and partners. Knowledge of deal structure, rights options and talent negotiations is a plus, but not required.
  • You’re able to prioritize and manage multiple ongoing projects simultaneously, adapt to changing priorities and tight deadlines, and handle difficult situations with unflappable problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with Head of US Content to help develop out a slate of scripted and unscripted SIE content in various formats that help to solidify the PMC brand. Pro-actively seek projects that align with PMC’s mission, vision and values, and ensure a consistent level of quality and fiscal responsibility is maintained on all creative fronts.
  • Keep up to date on trends, strategies and the overall landscape, and introduce the team to new innovations in storytelling. Build rapport and maintain relationships with management companies and talent agencies in order to source IP for consideration in all formats – podcasts, books, stories and scripts. Present ideas to leadership in a clear, articulate, and engaging manner.
  • Oversee project development – maintain a robust development pipeline, attend general and pitch meetings. Identify, secure, and collaborate with key creatives (Producers, Directors, Writers). Curate and create new content, for current or future projects in development.
  • Generate notes/reports on submitted and in-house stories, outlines, scripts, cuts and more; pitch or attend pitches to studios/buyers; supervise projects through the various stages of development and guide editorial on pilot/presentations; resolve conflicts and ensure that projects are delivered on time and on budget, and successfully fulfill the parameters/needs of PMC.
  • Leverage existing relationships at broadcast and cable networks, emerging digital platforms, and with other industry contacts, and help the Head of US Content oversee, prioritize and organize the flow of development/project staffing, and help to identify and troubleshoot when the process has gone off track.
  • Participate in the creative and development processes to generate scripts, character designs and pitch documents, as well as interpret and translate notes from creative discussions to internal stakeholders, and ensure timely distribution of materials to Execs and talent, as well as give clear and supportive feedback to creative teams. Work with the Development Coordinator to maintain detailed project tracking.
  • With the Head of US Content, build out social issue impact campaigns for each project and integrate issues into narratives that activate the audience, while also identifying transmedia and non-profit alliance partners to amplify and activate around the impact goals.

Background & Qualifications:

  • A minimum of three years of relevant work experience in scripted television development at a production company, network or streamer, in a coordinator, manager, or director role, overseeing assigned projects.
  • Education: BA /BS degree, related field preferred, or equivalent work experience.
  • Background in non-scripted/documentary, features, podcasts and/or other formats highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated skill in developing and maintaining effective business relationships.
  • Must be a team player and willing to work evenings or weekends with short notice as needed.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook are required. Knowledge of Adobe Premiere editing and Final Draft screenwriting software is highly desirable.
  • Valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle.
  • Satisfactory completion of industry related background checks.

Location: Position is based in the Los Angeles, CA area. Domestic travel (up to 10%) to conferences, meetings, and media production environments may be required.

Population Media Center (PMC) is looking to expand its Administration Department by adding an Administrative Assistant to the team. This full time position is responsible for a variety of administrative responsibilities supporting all teams in the organization. This is a great entry-level opportunity to join a passionate team of professionals who are driven and inspired by our vision of a sustainable planet with equal rights for all.

Key Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

  • Drafting and editing content for various newsletters and general business correspondence
  • Calendaring support, materials preparation and note taking for various departmental meetings
  • Assisting with travel accommodations, visa applications, and logistics for major meetings and events
  • Entering Executive meeting notes into fundraising database and scheduling follow-on actions
  • Processing incoming donations and generating thank you letters in a timely manner
  • Acting as host/moderator for videoconferences/meetings
  • Tracking and assessing grant opportunities
  • Digital filing and IT troubleshooting for local and remote staff
  • Front desk reception & mail, phone & general email inbox triage
  • Maintaining office supplies and equipment

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent from a two-year college, 6-12 months related experience or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Positive attitude with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Donor database or data entry experience and basic internet research and email skills
  • Proficiency in Windows 7 or 10, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle

Highly Desirable:

  • Four year college degree preferred
  • Skills in graphic editing & design software, Office 365, OneDrive or SharePoint
