Mother: Caring For 7 Billion

United States

Mother: Caring for 7 Billion is an independent film produced by Tiroir A. Films and supported by Population Media Center. It was released in 2011 and focuses on the intricate and important relationship between the growing human population, human rights, and the environment.

Mother: Caring for 7 Billion, a 69-minute documentary produced by Tiroir A. Films, an organization that creates PSAs, documentaries, and communications programs on human rights and environmental issues. It was directed and produced by Christophe Fauchère and co-produced by Joyce Johnson. As they began their research, Lester Brown suggested an interview with PMC’s President Bill Ryerson. They were so impressed by Ryerson and PMC’s work that they decided to feature PMC’s work in the documentary.

Mother: Caring for 7 Billion takes a personal and global look at human population growth, its impact on the Earth, and its connection to human rights. It was released in 2011 in English. Mother: Caring for 7 Billion is now also available in Spanish and French and can be watched online for free until Dec 2015 in an effort to put population on the agenda for the UN Climate Conference in Paris in November 2015. Empowering and educating girls and women needs to be included in climate talks.

Schools and groups without strong internet connection interested in showing Mother: Caring for 7 Billion should sign up to receive a copy. The French and Spanish DVDs will be available soon.

The documentary follows Beth, who comes to discover the thorny complexities of the population issue. Beth’s journey brings her to reflect on what it means to come from a large American family, she was one of 10 children, and the decisions she and her husband made for their family, raising two biological children and one adopted African-born daughter.

Her journey also takes her to Ethiopia where she meets Zinet, the oldest daughter of a desperately poor family of 12. Zinet has found the courage to break free from thousand-year-old-cultural barriers, and their encounter will change Beth forever. This experience also introduces Beth to PMC’s approach to addressing human rights and population because Zinet is an avid listener to one of PMC’s radio serial dramas.

Mother: Caring for 7 Billion doesn’t blame — it educates, highlighting a different path for humanity, and focuses on raising the status of women worldwide as the first step toward progress. It features interviews with world-renown experts and scientists, including some of PMC’s staff.  More information about Mother: Caring for 7 Billion is available online.
