Join PMC in Bali for the International Conference on Family Planning

BALI, INDONESIA — Population Media Center looks forward to an exciting International Conference on Family Planning in Bali next week. We hope to see you! Here are some specific events where PMC will be participating:

January 25th Youth Pre-Conference: PMC Presents “Social Media: The Power of Networking for Promotion”
Approximately 200 youth, half from Indonesia and half from all over the world, are expected on January 24th and 25th as part of the Youth Pre-Conference. PMC’s Stephanie Tholand and UNFPA’s Jennie Greaney will lead a 2-hour workshop on Monday, January 25 with 20 of the participants called “Social Media: The Power of Networking for Promotion.” Participants will use existing, readily available information to design an advocacy campaign using social media (and new media and traditional media) to share issues highlighted during ICFP.

January 26th Poster Presentation: “The Impact of an Entertainment-Education Radio Serial Drama on Family Planning, Sexual and Reproductive Health, and Malaria Attitudes and Behaviors in Sierra Leone”
PMC’s Stephanie Tholand will give a poster presentation (poster ID 2.04) on “The Impact of an Entertainment-Education Radio Serial Drama on Family Planning, Sexual and Reproductive Health, and Malaria Attitudes and Behaviors in Sierra Leone” from 2:20 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 26 in the Jimbaran and Uluwatu Lobbies of Building One. The poster will be viewable from 2:20 p.m. to 5:40 p.m.

January 26th Panel: “Overcoming Community Members Low Demand for Contraception Caused by Myths, Misinformation and Cultural Barriers”
As members of the IBP Initiative, PMC and Georgetown Institute for Reproductive Health organized a panel which PMC’s Bill Ryerson and Victoria Jennings of Georgetown will co-chair (ID # 1.4.06). It’s called “Overcoming Community Members Low Demand for Contraception Caused by Myths, Misinformation and Cultural Barriers” on Tuesday, January 26 from 4:20 p.m. to 5:40 p.m. in Kintamani 3. The panel participants include: PATH, Ibis Reproductive Health, Dr. Negussie Teffera of PMC’s Ethiopia office, Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs, and an additional brief presentation by UNFPA.

January 27th Panel: “Demand Creation and Overcoming Cultural and Informational Barriers to Contraceptive Use”
PMC organized the panel “Demand Creation and Overcoming Cultural and Informational Barriers to Contraceptive Use” (ID # 2.1.02) on Wednesday, January 27 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. in Uluwatu 1. The panel is chaired by Jennifer Pope, Director of Family Planning and Reproductive Health at Population Services International, and panel participants include: DKT International, Population Council, Bill Ryerson of PMC, and International Planned Parenthood Federation.

January 27th Panel Presentation: “Expanding Family Planning Reach Through Multi-Media Programs”
PMC’s Stephanie Tholand is presenting on the panel (ID # 2.1.13) “Expanding Family Planning Reach through Multi-Media Programs,” sharing the results from PMC’s research paper “Saving Mothers’ and Children’s Lives: Using Radio Serial Dramas to Promote Family Planning and Influence Maternal and Infant Health Attitudes, Intentions and Behavior in Burkina Faso” on Wednesday, January 27 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. in Legian 1. The panel is moderated by Arzum Ciloglu and Fitri Putjuk of Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs and the other panel participants include Futures Group, Population Services Kenya, Marie Stopes International Ethiopia, and Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs.

January 27th Panel Presentation: “Using Entertainment Media to Increase Awareness of Emergency Contraception”
PMC’s Bill Ryerson is presenting “Using Entertainment Media to Increase Awareness of Emergency Contraception” about PMC’s United States TV serial drama East Los High’s inclusion of emergency contraception on the panel “Emergency Contraception Access: Not There Yet.” (ID # 2.1.09) on Wednesday, January 27 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. in Kintamani 7. The panel is moderated by Sarah Rich of the International Consortium on Emergency Contraception, and panel participants include International Consortium on Emergency Contraception, Polytechnique University of Malawi, PMC, and UNC – Carolina Population Center.
