Staff Spotlight: Foluwakemi Ogunkua

What is your name, position, and how long have you worked for PMC?
My name is Foluwakemi Ogunkua. I am currently the Marketing and Communications officer for Population Media Center-Nigeria. May 2021 marks my two years anniversary working for PMC.

What is your favorite thing about working at PMC?
My favorite thing about working for PMC is the creative space given to implement new ideas and innovations, think outside the box, and a sense of community. Also, the opportunity to work with amazing and intellectual people around the world who use their skills to transform lives through the media. This gives me the zeal to wake up every morning to go to work and also helps me stay grounded and committed to the mission and vision of PMC. Working at PMC has given me the opportunity to meet people who have helped and keep helping me build my career beyond the walls of PMC. I have also made friends that will last a lifetime.

What is a normal day for you at PMC?
Given my position as the Marcomm manager, I constantly receive feedback from fans, partners, and freelancers that I attend to swiftly. I also organize the posts on social media for each day.

When I get to the office, I meet people with different views under the same roof to have intellectual conversations. I will check my emails, post and communicate with fans on our social media handles and talk to fans on the phone. I also work on any task I need to complete, eat lunch, and research new innovative marketing ideas before ending the day. Each day is different due to the different tasks that may arise, but my job always involves creating a positive image for the organization and liaising with partners and freelancers, so I task myself to look for innovative ways to keep giving PMC a positive image.

What is one of the biggest challenges of your job?
Dealing with fans on some of the projects I have worked on can be challenging. As much fun as it is interacting with our audience, there can be difficult moments, too.

Why did you decide to work for PMC?
I came for a training workshop for creative writing in March 2019, which has been helpful to me, as writing is an essential skill for a communications officer. The knowledge I gained alongside the warmth and togetherness prompted me to apply for this role when it became available.

Tell us a little about your childhood, family, or favorite things to do outside of PMC.
I grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, with my siblings and my parents alongside my extended family. My childhood was filled with fun, love, togetherness, lots of traveling, good food, ups and downs, and partying.

I currently live in Abuja, Nigeria, with my family. I love reading (mostly horror and thrillers), traveling, good music, learning new things, cooking, dancing, fashion, and spending time with my family and close friends because they keep me grounded.

Is there anything else you would like to share about yourself or your work?
I am happiest when I help others in relation to my work. I reward myself with every milestone I achieve.
