Population Media Center has worked in Uganda since 2018 as a social behavior change communication partner. Most notably the team supported the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development (FCDO) Reducing High Fertility Rates and Improving Sexual Reproductive Health Outcomes in Uganda (RISE) project. As part of the project, PMC-Uganda broadcast two long-running radio shows designed to entertain and change attitudes and behaviors.

Akakunizo (“Jigsaw Puzzle”), a 156-episode Luganda-language radio drama, is airing across multiple districts from Northeastern to Central-western Uganda. Produced as part of the RISE consortium with lead partner MSI Choices, the series explores themes of family planning, sexual and gender-based violence, and maternal and child health and nutrition, sparking critical conversations across diverse communities.
Sotakai (“Footsteps”), a 156-episode radio show, began airing in October 2019 in English. Broadcast across numerous districts from Northeastern to Central-Western Uganda, Sotakai addresses key topics such as family planning, sexual and gender-based violence, and maternal and child health and nutrition. Developed as part of the RISE consortium, the show unites Population Media Center with MSI Choices and four other leading organizations to increase modern family planning rates across six regions of Uganda.
Dunga, a children’s program developed by PMC-Uganda for the International Rescue Committee’s “Play Well East Africa” project funded by the Lego Foundation, promotes social-emotional learning. Adapted into seven languages, the series reached displaced communities across Uganda and Tanzania, engaging diverse audiences through culturally relevant storytelling.
