PMC BREAKAWAY Clinches First Place at the Digital Communications Awards
Population Media Center (PMC), a renowned nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering individuals and communities through transformative storytelling, is thrilled to announce its resounding victory at this year’s Digital Communications Awards!
PMC’s innovative BREAKAWAY video game has achieved the prestigious first-place position in the Contest & Game category.
Natalia Cereser, Acting Vice President of International Programs, and Wendi Stein, International Programs Operations Manager, have developed and expanded the BREAKAWAY project, serving as two formidable pillars of strength and innovation throughout this journey. Together with the invaluable contributions of Champlain College, especially Champlain’s Ann DeMarle, and Aminata Touré, former head of Gender, Culture, and Human Rights at UNFPA and subsequently Prime Minister of Senegal, BREAKAWAY was developed to empower players to make choices that promote positive change on and off the field. Since its launch at the 2010 FIFA World Cup soccer tournament in South Africa, the game has captivated youth worldwide, reaching over 150 countries and is slated to be implemented in even more countries in 2024!
“We’re deeply honored by BREAKAWAY‘s first-place win in the Contest & Game category at DCA 2023! BREAKAWAY’s success is a testament to our commitment to entertainment-education. We’re thrilled by its impact on youth globally and remain dedicated to innovative approaches that drive positive change through storytelling,” said Cereser.
At the same time, PMC has been honored with a nomination in the esteemed Storytelling category. PMC’s transformative storytelling approach tackles deeply entrenched, personal beliefs, offering a safe and captivating means to address fundamental threats to social and environmental justice where it matters most – in hearts and minds. These achievements hold special significance as PMC commemorates its 25th anniversary, further reinforcing the organization’s dedication to empowering individuals and communities worldwide through transformative entertainment-education.
“We are very proud of our team and grateful for the opportunity to share our work on such a prestigious platform. This win and shortlisting are a testament to PMC’s commitment to pushing boundaries and delivering solutions that transform communities,” said William Ryerson, President and Founder of PMC.
The DCA 2023 Communications Award is a recognition of excellence in the industry, and PMC’s success serves as an inspiration to continue pushing the envelope. PMC extends its gratitude to the DCA 2023 Awards panel, our dedicated global team members, and all those who have supported us on this remarkable journey. As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we have our sights set on tomorrow. We look forward to many more years of innovation and impact.
