Population Media Center Celebrates 25 Years of Transformative Storytelling
Burlington, VT – Population Media Center (PMC), a renowned nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering individuals and communities through transformative storytelling, is thrilled to announce the celebration of its 25th anniversary. This momentous occasion will be marked by a special virtual event bringing together leaders, advocates, and game-changers to honor PMC’s incredible contributions.
Since its inception in June 1998 by William Ryerson, PMC has been rewriting the narrative, empowering individuals and communities worldwide through transformative entertainment-education programs. By harnessing the power of storytelling, PMC has tackled critical issues such as women’s rights, environmental conservation, and the urgent need to address population growth. With each compelling story, PMC has flipped the script, challenging societal norms and driving positive change in communities worldwide.
Over the past 25 years, PMC’s impact has been nothing short of extraordinary. Their groundbreaking initiatives have reached tens of millions of people in 50 countries, igniting conversations and fostering meaningful change. They have transformed lives, shattered stereotypes, and empowered individuals to become agents of positive transformation.
“As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, I am humbled and grateful for the incredible impact PMC has made,” says Ryerson.
One shining example of PMC’s trailblazing efforts is the creation of BREAKAWAY, an immersive video game developed in collaboration with Champlain College. BREAKAWAY tackles violence against women, bullying, and gender equality. The game empowers youth to make choices that promote positive change on and off the field. Since its launch at the 2010 FIFA World Cup soccer tournament in South Africa, BREAKAWAY has captured the hearts and minds of millions of players from over 150 countries. PMC’s shows, such as Kwishilya in Zambia and East Los High on Hulu, have consistently demonstrated the power of storytelling in driving tangible results and igniting change.
Looking ahead, PMC embraces the challenge of rewriting the story for a sustainable future. They are committed to driving societal transformation. Through innovative storytelling and collaborative efforts, they will continue to flip the script, break barriers, and create a brighter future for all.
