On a Mission at Population Media Center
SOUTH BURLINGTON, VT – Global impact requires strategy and coordination. Almost two years ago, Population Media Center gathered its headquarters staff at a retreat in Burlington, Vermont. It was an opportunity to reflect on where the organization had been and, importantly, where it wanted to go. The staff agreed that the work we do was so important to people and planet – the organization had to jump beyond our comfort zone and try to impact millions or billions of more people in a relatively short amount of time.
One of the key elements that the Board of Directors and staff examined was the mission statement. Although the mission was still accurate (dedicated to using mass media to improve lives and create a more sustainable planet) it needed to more clearly reflect the organization’s use of entertainment to achieve change; the emphasis on the rights of women and girls, population, and the environment; and the humanitarian and environmental results from the work. Population Media Center is proud to share its revised mission and vision statements:
Vision: A sustainable planet with equal rights for all.
Mission: To use entertainment-education and mass media to promote social and cultural change by addressing the interconnected issues of the full rights of women and girls, population, and the environment. Our goals are to empower people to live healthier and more prosperous lives and to stabilize global population at a level at which people can live sustainably with the world’s renewable resources.
In the coming weeks, Population Media Center will share its strategic plan which looks ahead to 2025 and outlines he ways in which Population Media Center aims to become more efficient and more effective.
